  • Notes
    • Always known as Susan.
    • When she married Richard Bassett in Melbourne, Susan was faced with a problem when the couple stood in front of the Registrar. Her mother had given birth to her out of wedlock and Susan did not know who her father was. She panicked and invented 'Thomas Yelland' on the spot but instantly and horribly was then struck by the need to invent a maiden name for her mother. She plumped for 'Mary Ann Boll' which got her off the hook but then left here descendants confused for some years when tracking down the elusive maid with a strange taste in names. (Info from Peter Hendra)
    • Information from family researcher Faye Farmer (April 2018) It's pretty obvious the names were invented, whether on the spot in a panic, or in advance! I don't think she invented Thomas Yelland off the top of her head though. Her official surname was her mother's maiden name Yelland, and her stepfather was Thomas (Hendra), so she just used his given name with her surname. How she came up with the surname Boll for her mother Mary Ann I have no clue. When I searched I could find no such surname in the whole of England!

Finding Susan's children was interesting, as when their births were registered, she was recorded with all kinds of combinations of her given names Lavinia, Matilda and Susan, paired with either Yelland or Hendra, or Yelland formerly Hendra. She could be Susan Hendra in one, and Matilda Yelland in another, so it appeared that her husband was having children with a number of different women! It took a while to figure out what was going on, as this was before I knew she was illegitimate.
