The photographs [see also photo 172] were taken in the very small back yard of my grandparents house (Sam Chick and Emma Dibble Chick) and corner shop which later became my parents home.

My grandmother had a glass cabinet in the "front room" containing all the cups and prizes my Uncle Bob (Navy) and Uncle Don (Welsh Guards) won. There were three other Chick boys (sons of Great Uncle Frank and Great Aunt Gerti) and collectively they were known as the Five Chick Boys.

I quote from information written by my cousin Kenny - " In between the Wars my Grandfather Sam Chick was involved with Gymnastics and Boxers. He was approach by the Penarth U.D.C. to be a trainer in the Gym that was set up in Penarth Baths when the Baths were closed for the Winter. The Gym was for the benefit of the unemployed during the Depression of the 20s and 30s. It was one of many Schemes set up to occupy the unemployed men of Penarth. He staged Boxing Tournaments in the "Shelter" on Penarth Promenade and charged for admission - the money being spent for the benefit of the unemployed. The Boxers included Bob and Don and his nephews Howard, Ronald and Bernard who were sons of Frank Chick (Sam's brother) Sam also helped in the training of Boxers and Gymnasts in a makeshift Gym in Arcot Lane - again for the benefit of the unemployed.

Sam's sons Bob and Don and their cousins Howard, Ronald and Bernard were all Top Class Boxers who won National and International Titles including Military, Armed Forces and Police Forces. In the "Penarth Times" for the years 1920 to 1930 the name "Chick" was mentioned almost on a weekly basis." [Patricia Brinkworth 7/2011]
