Penarth County Grammar School

Aunt Mary's [Taylor] 'Brief History' mentions the 'County School' - this was the selective County Grammar School in Stanwell Road, Penarth (very near Winterbourne) - pupils had to pass the 11+ exams in English and Mathematics to gain entry. Pupils could stay there until the age of 14. This was later changed by law to 15 and then 16. These days pupils may stay there until 18. It has changed its name to Stanwell Comprehensive School. I believe that Millie, Mary and my father Sidney all attended this school, plus I would have thought many of Jack Ryan's family. Certainly by the time I was there Nick Bradley had been a pupil. [L.
